I recently viewed a television program that celebrated the advances in children’s heart surgery. One scene was dramatic: as doctors completed their intricate surgical procedure, the skin color of the infant lying on the operating table began to visibly change from its pale – almost blue – color to a rosy pink. Blood, previously constricted, now flowed freely and the heart began to healthily pump new life into the child. In her book, Sacred Rhythms, Ruth Haley Barton describes one busy executive’s practice to keep his spiritual “heart” healthy:
- having a “quiet heart” that is not distraught with internal regrets nor frenzied by external circumstances
- having a “circumcised heart” that is cut free from having to be right and is free from attachments to sports, food, recognition from others
- having a “burning heart” that is focused on pleasing God
- having a “dancing heart” that serves others with joy and gladness
The child with a mended heart can look forward to a life of meaningful activity and relationships. Business men and women with healthy spiritual hearts can have meaningful – even holy – impact in their homes, their companies and the world.Father God, I am grateful for your strength and grace that enables me to live according to your plan as I accept you into my life and commit my ways to you.
